We are happy to introduce you to typical Chinese cuisine here.
The most famous requisite in Chinese cuisine: chopsticks
Europeans often try to eat their food with chopsticks when they order Asian food. This often causes amusement, as it often doesn't work straight away due to a lack of practice. As the Chinese eat with chopsticks, which they naturally practise from an early age, the food must also be served in suitable pieces or cubes so that it can be comfortably grasped with the chopsticks.
Ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner
Breakfast often includes a cereal porridge and steamed wheat or sesame rolls. Fried wheat pancakes are also popular. Rice is a must at lunchtime, and rolls and soup are also served here. At least one or two other dishes are also part of a Chinese lunch.
The Chinese attach the most importance to the evening meal, which is prepared and eaten together. There are many specialties, especially on festive days, which vary depending on the geographical region. Tea is part of every meal. Alcohol is mainly consumed on special occasions or to say hello and goodbye.
The various regional dishes
Depending on the geographical location and available food, different cuisines have developed, for example:
Cantonese (Guangdong)
People here love braising and steaming or roasting. A lot of sauces are used and the dishes are mild, tender and taste slightly sweet. Cantonese crab dumplings "sum", for example, are popular and well-known. There are also many dishes with chicken and rice noodles.
Min
This cuisine originates from Fujian and often combines sweet and sour. It is very spicy and sweet and likes to work with pepper and mustard. Soups are particularly popular here. All dishes are briefly fried, but also baked, grilled, deep-fried or cooked with red rice wine. The cuisine is particularly varied and is known throughout China.
Shandong (Lu)
This cuisine is the most widespread cuisine in China. It emphasizes fresh ingredients and is slightly salty. There is a lot of seafood and also vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, mushrooms and onions. Cooks mainly use two cooking methods: bao = quick frying and pa = frying until golden brown and adding sauce.
Sichuan
The dishes here are mainly quickly fried, but also baked or steamed. The entire cuisine is sour and above all very spicy, as pepper grows in Sichuan. Chili is also a popular ingredient. The most popular example of this cuisine is kung pao chicken. In addition to chicken, duck and fish are also popular.
Su (Jiangsu)
This cuisine from Jiangsu province is fresh, only slightly sweet or salty and is still used at state banquets in China. It uses many seasonal vegetables as well as fresh fish and seafood. The dishes are often steamed or gratinated, braised in clay and cooked on a spit. A lot of bamboo and chestnuts are used here.
